Who can
send photos to the Tewkesbury.Net PhotoBlog?
People who live or work in the Tewkesbury.Net area, i.e. the postcode
areas of GL20 5-- / GL20 6-- / GL20 7-- / GL20 8-- / GL19 4--.
What type
of photos are you looking for?
To be honest, we don't know where this idea is going. We think that a
mixture of photos that may be newsworthy, or inconsequential, complaining
or praising or maybe just plain weird, will take on a life of their own.
We are looking for a mixture of photos that are compulsive viewing that
reflect living and/or working in Tewkesbury. We are certainly not looking
for technically 'good' photographs - in fact we think that the medium
of the mobile phone will promote 'informality with rough edges'. The text
messages that accompany the photo add a further dimension - maybe they
will prove more important than the photos!
What about
privacy issues?
A difficult issue! The UK has no privacy laws (unlike countries like France).
Until recently it was fair game to photograph people in a public place.
However recent challenges under the European Human Rights legislation
appear to have extended the rights of privacy to some extent. As a general
rule of thumb, we probably won't display images of people unless it is
obvious that the photo is taken at a public event.
Do you
moderate the photos and text content?
We moderate
obvious breaches of our guidlines and we limit publication if an unmanageable
amount of images are received. However, we place the responsibility for
content on your shoulders, see our terms and conditions.
How do
I send the photos?
First
of all you'll need a mobile phone with a camera that supports MMS (Multimedia
Messaging Service) - after that it's down to the individual quirks of
the phone and service provider. Then you need to register with us here
- please remember to read our terms and conditions before registering.
Where
do I send my photos?
By mms email message to mms@tewkesbury.net.
Why do
I have to register?
Firstly, so we can establish that you live/work in Tewkesbury and secondly,
because under our terms and conditions we make you responsible for the
contents of your messages. Lastly, our automated system will not process
emails from un-registered people.
Does it
cost anything?
Tewkesbury.Net does not receive money from mobile phone service providers
if you use their photo messaging service. However, your mobile phone company
will charge you. (Our current costs for us to send a photo message with
Orange are 20p per photo message.)
How does
it work?
Aha. Your email passes through 5 filters/programs, so we only get to see
photos sent by registered users of our photo messaging system. If you'd
like a similar system implemented, contact us for a quote.
How do
I find out my mobile phone's email address?
The simple way is to send an email from your mobile phone to your normal
email address and then to look at the 'from' address. Our experience with
Orange is that the email/webmail address assigned by Orange for receiving
email is not the same as the address assigned by the phone when you send
an email. With Orange it follows the format 441234567890@orangemms.net.
How long
does it take to get my image onto Tewkesbury.Net?
It's theoretically possible for the images to appear within 10 minutes
of you sending them, however it will normally be within 24 hours.
I sent
an standard email to mms@tewkesbury.net and got no reply.
You won't - this address is never looked at by humans! If you have a query,
email us at photos@tewkesbury.net.
Can I
send video to you using this service?
We don't at the current time. We may in the future. Watch this space.
Do you
provide any other mobile services?
Yes, we've run a WAP service for 5 years at www.tewkesbury.net/wap/waphome.asp
