WORK STARTS ON NEW HOSPITAL UNIT Day Case Room Should Open in New Year.
Work has started on a new day case unit for Tewkesbury hospital.
The new £200,000 unit is being funded by the Hospital League of Friends and will provide beds for people who need care after treatment, but do not need to be kept in hospital overnight.
At the moment such patients take up beds on Severn Ward, which means that although the ward is full in the daytime, it often has spare beds at night.
This means that Surgeons are often unable to carry out as many operations as they otherwise might, because of a lack of recovery beds.
The new unit is being built in the old female day room on Severn Ward and will solve these problems as well as providing badly needed changing facilities for theatre staff.
The work is expected to take about 16 weeks, and Paul Sinnot, chairman of the League of Friends said: "It should be in use early in the new year."
