Lancastrian Lords lose their heads!
Executions caught on camera

Our web camera was right on the spot when fifteen beheadings were carried out in Tewkesbury last weekend. Those losing their heads were Lancastrian nobles captured by the Yorkist army whilst trying to seek sanctuary in the Abbey.

After the main battle on the fields at Gupshill Manor on Saturday afternoon, a group of defeated Lancastrians made their way to the Abbey to seek sanctuary. The fleeing soldiers were captured by pursuing Yorkists and given a very brief trial before being executed outside the Abbey.

Around 500 people gathered in the Crescent to enjoy the drama and the small street fair in Gander Lane. Street entertainment was provided by local band, Twisted Rootes, and juggler, Steve Marsh.

The executions and the drama leading up to them were part of a plan to try and bring events from the Medieval Festival back into the town. Elaine Hancox of Tewkesbury Chamber of Commerce said: "It was good to see things back in the town, and we are very grateful to the Companions of the Black Bear who organised it all."
