Lancastrians to lose their heads

Up to 15 knights and noblemen could lose their heads on Saturday July 8, as part of this year's Medieval Festival. Some of the events that took place after the battle of 1471 are to be re-created in the town on Saturday evening from 7pm.

A number of scenes will acted out around the Abbey Grounds, resulting in 15 Lancastrian nobles being dragged to Gander Lane, where they will be tried for treason. If found guilty, they will be shown no mercy and will suffer the indignity of a public beheading!

Also in Gander Lane (from 6pm), is a Street Fayre with stalls and entertainment. The Fayre opens at 8.30pm on Friday evening (July 7) with a procession from the Bell Hotel to the Cross, where a wreath will be laid in memory of those who died in the Battle of Tewkesbury. The procession will then make its way back to the Vineyards for the lighting of a fire sculpture at 9.30pm.

The main Fayre will take place on the fields at the Gupshill Manor, commencing at 11am each day, with battle re-enactments at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. A regular free bus service will link the town and fair. A full programme is available from the Tourist Information Centre.
