Catching the walking bus
Kids take the green route to school.

Pupils from Mitton Manor Primary School are taking a new bus to school - it is a walking bus.

The walking bus scheme was designed to cut down on the number of cars driving to the school, but still get the children there safely.

The children, all wearing flourescent safety vests, set off every morning from Oldbury Road Car Park.

They are accompanied by two volunteer parents, who have been specially trained by the County Council's Road Safety department.

It takes them about half an hour to get to the school in Carrant Road.

A rota of trained parents means that no one has to do 'walking bus duty' too often.

Not only does the scheme cut down on traffic around the school, which means less pollution and danger of road accidents, it also gives the youngsters fresh air and exercise, and a chance to talk to their friends about what they did the night before.

Head teacher Chris Hyatt said: "It seems to be working well. If there is a demand we will consider another walking bus to bring children in from the top end of Mitton.''
