Civic Society Awards
Eye sores get most votes.
More people are interested in highlighting Tewkesbury's eyesores than its best buildings.
Nominations are flooding in for the Civic Society's Year 2000 Awards, but 90 percent of them are for the town's biggest eye sore.
Classes for the best restoration and best contemporary building are attracting much less notice.
Patricia Purkiss, who is organising the event said: "Some rather suprising, but nevertheless valid, nominations have been received, with one building being nominated for best restoration by one person, and as an eyesore by another.
Nicholas Molyneaux, the South West inspector for English Heritage and acknowledged World expert on Medieval and Tudor architecture, has agreed to be the 'period' specialist judge.
Rod Robinson of Rod Robinson Associates, Hereford, will be the 'contemporary' expert.
His design for the new offices, vestry and restaurant at All Saints Church, Hereford, won the Royal Institute of British Architects Award for 1999.
The third judge, a town planning expert, has not yet been announced.
The results of the competition will be announced at a special reception in the Town Hall on September 22nd. It will also be televised by Midlands Today.
