KEEPING AN EYE OUT FOR TROUBLE Mobile cctv could cut crime
Vandals and petty criminals have moved out of the town centre, since the installation of CCTV cameras.
Now the police are looking at using mobile wire less cameras in other trouble spots. The cameras can be set up at very short notice on any pre-prepared lamp post or other piece of street furniture.
They cost £8,000 each and the police are talking to the town and borough councils about contributing to the costs.
The town council is considering making a contribution instead of paying for a fixed camera to be installed in the Back of Avon, where anti-social behaviour and vandalism is a serious problem.
Town Clerk Mike Wilson said: "There are a number of questions to be answered before councillors can make a decision - such as how will they be monitored, can they be remotely controlled and how clear are the pictures”.
Councillors will consider the matter when they meet on Monday February 14.
