Hall Saved For Town
New community facility planned
The Saxon Shadows, led by Mrs Danter, have just been given a 12 year lease on the old Youth Annex in Barton Street.
Now they are fund raising to renovate the former school and make it suitable for a wide range of activities.
Mrs Danter started her campaign to save the building when it was listed for closure under a cost cutting exercise by the county council’s Youth and Community Service.
Now after a great deal of letter writing and form filling they have agreed to let her have it at a peppercorn rent.
She has several plans for activities there herself, but would also like to see it used by as many parts of the community as possible.
She said: "It is a wonderful big open space, all on one level, with a high roof. There is also outdoor space at the back which makes it ideal for so many things. I just want to see it used as much as possible."
However, first it has to be renovated, it needs re-wiring, the toilets need replacing and there are countless other jobs to be done.
She would love to hear from anyone willing to help financially, practically, or with donation of materials. Mrs Danter can be contacted on 01684-293234.
