Not only does it look much smarter, it is now more accessible to people with disabilities. A ramp leads up to the path from the moorings, and the new lock gate has got a walkway along the top, wide enough to take a wheelchair.
The river from King John’s bridge to Allied Mills has been de-silted, and a great deal of rubbish removed from the bed. This has made the moorings safer and more accessible.
The lock itself has been drained and renovated and a new lock gate fitted with an hydraulic mechanism. A lock keeper's hut separates boaters from the mechanism.
Plans are now in hand to renovate the approach from the river Severn.
The work has been funded by grants from Tewkesbury Town and Borough and Gloucestershire County Councils and the Environment Agency.
Lock keeper Nigel Preece is looking forward to a very busy Easter, with lots of visitors to enjoy the new facilities.
