Saving The Gloworms
Friends of the Earth to set up protection group.
The Tewkesbury branch of Friends of the Earth are setting up a working party to protect the town’s famous glowworm colony. The colony, one of the largest in the country, was threatened with extinction, when the County Council announced plans to build the Northern by pass over its home along the old railway lane.
However plans for the new road were shelved last year, and at their meeting this week Friends of the Earth decided to set up the group to develop the site as a cycle and pedestrian way, and protect the wildlife, particularly the glowworms.
FoE spokesman, Mike Sztymiak said: “We want to protect them from any development not in sympathy with their natural environment, such as the wrong lighting. It is a thriving colony. One night last year we counted 195, the most ever. They could be a great asset to the town."
