Tewkesbury man is armour maker to the stars
Dave Cubbage, of Tewkesbury based Armordillo Ltd has spent three months making armour for a film starring Whoopie Goldburg. Leprechauns was made by Hallmark Films, who were responsible for the highly successful 'Merlin.' It also stars Zoe Wannamaker, Roger Daltrey and Frank Finlay.
Dave, who has perfected a secret method of spray moulding plastic, produced 250 pieces of fairy armour that appear to be made from bark, wood and other natural materials.
Local basket maker Richard Hughes was also called in to produce woven willow breast plates. Sadly, none of the stars visited his workshop on the Tewkesbury trading estate for a fitting. "They each have their own wardrobe person, who is responsible for their costumes, and I worked with them," he said.
Leprechauns has been made for television and he originally thought it would be shown at Easter. However, no date has yet been fixed.
Dave trained originally as engineer and has been making armour professionally for five years. His business grew from his interest in history. He is a member of a group that re-enacts scenes from Medieval life, and his first suit of armour was for himself. Orders from other people with the same interests followed and the idea of becoming a professional armourer grew from there. He made much of the armour for a recently made film of 'Jason and the Argonauts.' He is now coming much more up to date working on 'Band of Brothers,' a prequel to Saving Private Ryan.
