FAIR SUCCESS
Showman's Guild Did Us Proud says Borough Mayor

With free rides for all the children, an extra evening to enjoy and a magnificent fireworks display, this year's Mop Fair really was one to remember.

The Fair opened two hours early on Sunday so that local primary school children could enjoy the free rides arranged by Borough Mayor Mark Calway and Town Mayor Peter Randell, in conjunction with the Showmen's Guild. The idea was to make Millenium year an especially memorable one for local youngsters.

The rides were all provided free of charge by the owners and operators. On Monday night the skies over the town were lit up by a fireworks display put on by the Showmen's guild as a Millenium gift to the town.

"The atmosphere was terrific - the Guild really did us proud, we owe them a debt of gratitude" said Coun Calway.

Town Mayor Coun Peter Randell said: "Everyone had a great time and the scheme was a great success."
The wet weather meant that the other nights were not as busy as might have been hoped.

Police say there was no trouble and the whole event went as smoothly as usual. The streets were clear, clean and re-opened to traffic by Wednesday morning.
