CLOISTERS PLAN FOR ABBEY Monks walkway to be re-created
The Cloisters on the South side of Tewkesbury Abbey are to be re-created. Work has already started on tidying up the area around the garden of remembrance, and plans are in hand to pave the walkway from the South Porch to the West end of the Abbey in York Stone. It is hoped at a later date to extend this to a complete square Cloister Walk around the garden.
This follows plans already announced to mark out the site of the old Lady Chapel, demolished around 1540, with stone slabs set into the turf. The Chapel was demolished as part of the Reformation, and the stone used in other buildings around Tewkesbury. Its outline was discovered in 1940 and, although the intention was to mark it’s position, the work was never carried out and the site was levelled.
