Business
Information
The area of Tewkesbury, which is predominantly rural in character,
offers a diverse range of industrial and commercial activities.
Situated in the Severn Vale, it has a well-developed strategic road
and rail network with the dominant feature, the M5 Motorway (Junctions
9,10,11,11a) running north/south providing good links to Birmingham,
Bristol, the West Country and South Wales. Recent major upgrading
of the A417/A419 provides a dual carriageway link between the south
of the Borough and the M4, giving easy access to London and the
South East.
A skilled
workforce, excellent labour relations and the proximity to markets
both national and local have attracted many new firms to the area.
Tewkesbury is considered both economically and environmentally,
an attractive, well located, secure place to be.
While
the national unemployment rate is 4.4% and the County has an unemployment
rate of 2.9%, the Borough of Tewkesbury has an unemployment rate
of 2.2%, one of the lowest in the county (Source: Gloucestershire
Labour Market Information Unit, April 1999).
The
area has so much to offer new industries - several new "high-tech"
estates as well as many older established industrial areas and rural
employment centres with close proximity to major road and rail routes,
set in pleasant surroundings of scarp and vale.
The
majority of companies are, however, SME's (Small to Medium sized
Enterprises) employing up to 200 people, producing goods as diverse
as beer, cheese, paper and amusement arcade machines, although precision
engineering, printing and electronics predominate. There are also
many free standing companies not located on established estates
and similarly businesses in converted farm buildings which have
proved a positive use for redundant rural facility as well as contributing
to the local rural economy.
